Make sure you don't miss Erlend Opvik and his ensemble, as they perform Opvik's OVERSEAS this Sunday at 55bar
1/24/2007 :: It will be a busy week for Norwegian jazz musician Erlend Opvik, finished off with a performance of his OVERSEAS this Sunday. Joining him are Tony Malaby on tenor sax, Sonny Wollesen on Drums and Jacob Sacks on Rhodes & Farfisa Organ.
2007 seems to be a busy year for Eivind, as he prepares to release the third part of the Overseas series following the first from 2003, which was on Downbeat's "Best CD's of 2003" list and and his sophomore album as a band leader; Overseas II, released May 2005, both on Fresh Sound Records. 2007 will also see the release of three other albums from groups Eivind is involved with.
Gilles Laheurte of Jazz Improv Magazine says Overseas' live show has "a certain “classical” richness showing great romantic sensibility, opening both ears and senses to a tranquil world impregnated with a sort of barren melancholy" with "profoundly personal statements exploring Opsvik’s melodic territory, creating vivid atmospheric audio landscapes, unveiling a peaceful communion with nature, at times solemn and anthem-like."
Note that you can also catch Eivind on Thursday 25th 8:30pm at Cornelia Street Cafe with Sam Sadigursky's Words Project, as well as on Saturday 27th 9pm at Jazz Gallery, 290 Hudson Street with Tony Malaby's Paloma Recio.
