Saturday November 9th, "Opsvik & Jennings" will be performing at Cake Shop in NYC. Join the duo for an intimate night of experimental jazz and electronica using a plethora of sounds wrought from banjos, concertinas, theremin, and lapsteel.
11/9/2006 :: If you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like if a bass player from the underground jazz scene in Oslo teamed up with a strange guitarist from the sticks in Oklahoma to make music - well, here it is. "opsvik & jennings" is a project from Eivind Opsvik and Aaron Jennings which merges styles from experimental to jazz to electronica while also paying great attention to pop and song-like structures. Aside from the genre blending style, there are a ton of great sounds such as arco bass, old pump organs, guitar parts cut into lots of tiny pieces, theremin melodies, tape loops and plenty of room sound pulses and beats.
Aaron Jennings: electric and acoustic guitars, lapsteel, banjo, samplers, software, vocals, concertina, electronics and more.
Eivind Opsvik: upright bass, electric bass, drums, keyboards, theremin, drum machines, pump organ, software, vocals, tape loops and more.
Eivind was born in Oslo, Norway, and started out playing the drums at a very early age. In his teens he gradually switched to bass and all through the 90's Eivind played with a diverse array of Oslo-based jazz/experimental groups. He has performed at festivals and in clubs all over Europe with musicians like Paal Nilssen-Love and Christian Wallumrød. He also received a degree in classical bass from the Norwegian State Academy of Music. In 1998 Eivind moved to New York City to be a part of the rich music scene, and he currently plays in a number of cutting-edge New York groups like Opsvik & Jennings, Kris Davis Quartet, David Binney/Bill Frisell Project, Tone Collector, Hari Honzu, Rocket Engine and Ben Gerstein Collective and has participated on recordings with all these bands. He recently also did a recording with pianist Jacob Sacks, Mat Maneri on viola and drum legend Paul Motian.
