On 28 September and 1 October, almost 2 full months before its premiere in Brussels, Belgium, Thomas Stanghelle's new opera, "Some Sunny Night" will play in Ohio and New York City
The opera, based on the strue story of handicapped Ketil Moe, his Chinese friend, Mark Wang, and Norwegian marathon queen, Grete Waitz, is set to play at the Sorg Opera House, Ohio, and The Bandshell in Central Park, New York.
In 2008 the opera will play during the Olympics in Beijing.
The story revolves around the late Ketil Moe, who ran the New York Marathon even though he suffered from cystic fibrosis. Having been diagnosed with the congenital disease at an early age, Moe was given slim chances of survival. Through a revolutionary training program, however, he became the longest-living person with such a handicap. Moe passed away in 1999 at the age of 32. He had then completed no less than 14 New York Marathons, the last 2 with transplanted lungs.
Waitz, a great inspiration to Moe while he was still alive, was diagnosed with cancer herself last summer. The marathon runner dominated the sport for years, winning the New York Marathon 9 times before retiring. She also has a long list of Olympic and World Championship medals in running events.
Mark Wang, a Chinese paraplegic met his hero, Moe, while on a scholarship in Norway, and is currently working to improve the conditions for China’s approximately 60 million handicapped people.
