DEPARTMENTS AND PROGRAMS
The Master of Fine Arts degree is awarded in six disciplines:

*Cinematography
*Directing
*Editing
*Producing
*Production Design
*Screenwriting

First Year
The first year of the conservatory is highly structured, involving a continuing cycle of production work. Students engage in their particular discipline’s curriculum and participate in a broad spectrum of master seminars devoted to all aspects of the moving image arts.

Second Year
Students focus on their thesis projects. In addition, students develop portfolios of individual and collaborative work. Acceptance into the second year is performance based.


ADMISSION AND THE APPLICATION PROCESS
Admission to the program is portfolio based and highly competitive.

Applications may be submitted to the First Year Program in the fields of cinematography, directing, editing, producing, production design, or screenwriting. A Bachelor’s degree is requied to receive a Master of Fine Arts degree after the successful completion of the program.

Candidates who have not completed a Bachelor’s degree in Filmmaking must have three to five years of professional experience. The ability to work independently and to take the initiative in a mature fashion are essential qualities for admission.

Applicants must submit:
*Application Form (original and three copies)
*$75.00 non-refundable application fee (check or money order only in US dollars made payable to AFI)
*Narrative statement (original and three copies)
*Resume (original and three copies)
*Supporting materials (will NOT be returned; send copies only)
*Name of discipline(s) on OUTSIDE of application package
*Academic transcripts from prior institution(s)
*Two letters of recommendation
*TOEFL and TSE scores, if applicable
*Self-addressed stamped postcard for acknowledgement of receipt (optional)

All applicants pursuing a Master’s degree who have received a degree from a foreign institution must submit a credentials comparison evaluation of their undergraduate work to verify a Bachelor’s degree equivalency.
