California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) was incorporated in 1961 as the nation's first art institute granting undergraduate and graduate degrees in both the visual and the performing arts.

CalArts was established through the merger of two well-established professional schools: the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, founded in 1883, and the Chouinard Art Institute, founded in 1921. CalArts is unique for having an equal focus on the visual and the performing arts—Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music and Theater—housed under one roof.

DEPARTMENTS AND PROGRAMS
SCHOOL OF FILM/VIDEO
This is a school of film, video and media makers: the tool may be the camera, the optical printer or the computer. Every path the moving image has taken in the past or might take in the future is kept open for exploration and use. They offer an education based on comprehensively designed and tested curricula with a strong emphasis on artistic and intellectual boldness.

The School of Film/Video offers programs in the areas of live-action film and video, animation, directing and multimedia. Undergraduate programs lead to a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree and graduate programs to a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree.

TUITION AND FEES
Tuition at CalArts is established annually by the Board of Trustees and is subject to change each year. Tuition in 2002-03 is $22,190 for full-time enrollment. It is anticipated that tuition will increase in successive years. New and prospective students will be notified when a change in the tuition rate occurs.

Tuition covers instruction, facilities, and some materials used within the regular programs. Students should be prepared to supply materials required for most projects. For new students, a nonrefundable admission deposit of $300, to be applied toward tuition, is due with the Statement of Intention to Register. Upon registration, new students must make a deposit of $300 to cover loss or damage to CalArts property (keys, library books, equipment, etc.). It is refundable at the time of graduation or withdrawal.
