DEPARTMENTS AND PROGRAMS
The Department of Film, Television and Digital Media offers four specializations that lead to the Master of Fine Arts degree. The MFA degree in Animation and degree in Production/Directing are three-year programs. The MFA degree in Screenwriting and the Producers Program MFA are two-year programs.
Degree Requirements:
MFA Screenwriting
Students must:
*demonstrate basic competence in film and television production through coursework
*complete two feature length screenplays before advancing to candidacy
*after advancing to candidacy, complete a third feature length screenplay acceptable to the thesis committee, or graduate on a body of work consisting of four acceptable *feature length screenplays
*maintain graduate residence for a minimum of 6 quarters, maximum 10 quarters
MFA Production/Directing and Production/Cinematography
Students must:
*obtain departmental approval for a thesis project
*complete a thesis project in either film or video acceptable to the thesis committee (each student is expected to write, direct and edit his/her own thesis production)
*maintain graduate residence for a minimum of 9 quarters, maximum of 12 quarters

Students in production programs are responsible for financing their own film and video projects. Production expenses will vary depending on the nature of the projects and the medium in which the student chooses to work.

ADMISSION AND THE APPLICATION PROCESS
Graduate applicants must have a four-year university degree and at least a "B" (or 3.00) average in the last two years of study.
Requirements for all departments:

*Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores for applicants with less than a 3.0 GPA in previous college work
*for international students: Financial Statement for Students Seeking Non-Immigrant Visas

*a description (2-3 pages) of a film or television project that might be undertaken during graduate residence at UCLA

*one or two treatments (1-3 pages each) for feature, television or new media projects that you expect to produce and that demonstrate your storytelling abilities
*applicants may submit one screenplay they have written or developed with a writer

*samples of creative writing such as screenplays, short stories, plays, poetry etc.
