Theatre scholar Leslie Jacobsen and award-winning actors Robert Prosky and Tana Hicken pay tribute to Norwegian master playwright Henrik Ibsen through lecture and live readings at The Smithsonian Associates on November 16.
11/14/2006 ::
Dubbed "the father of modern drama", Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) is arguably the most frequently performed playwright after Shakespeare. Although at times he faced great opposition and his work caused near-riots, he became a central figure of the modern breakthrough in the intellectual life of Europe. By infusing his dramas with ethical gravity, psychological depth, and social significance, he brought a vitality to the stage that had been lacking since Shakespearean times. Take a journey into the world of Ibsen as theatre scholar Leslie Jacobson, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at George Washington University and award-winning actors Robert Prosky and Tana Hicken among others celebrate Ibsen. Through lecture and live readings from his plays, the reasons why Ibsen was so controversial, universal, original and timeless are examined.
