The Commonweal Theatre has moved the annual Ibsen Festival from its traditional February dates to May 2-4, 2008. The weekend features over 30 events celebrating Scandinavian art and culture, including a production of Henrik Ibsen's "Peer Gynt".
With this change to a warmer time of year, the Commonweal looks forward to the opportunity to host outdoor events in Lanesboro's Sylvan Park which is adjacent to the Sons of Norway Lodge. The Commonweal will also be able to take advantage of its brand new theatre facility. Along with the enhanced production values afforded by the new theatre space, the facility also boasts a large rehearsal hall/reception room which will provide a venue for demonstrators, vendors and performers throughout the weekend.
The Festival will continue to feature educational activities provided through the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum and Luther College in Decorah, Iowa; demonstrations of Norwegian crafts and music by local artisans and musicians; panel discussions with scholars and artists; and significant volunteer involvement from local Sons of Norway chapter members.
