Norway Urges Renewed Focus on Nuclear Non-Proliferation

On behalf of seven countries Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Petersen presented Jean Ping, UN General Assembly president with proposals calling for strengthening the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

7/28/2005 :: The joint declaration from Australia, Chile, Indonesia, Romania, South Africa, the UK, and Norway states that it is now a critical time for the international community to take stock of how to respond to today’s threats. The foreign ministers of the seven countries affirm their commitment to work for a strong outcome for the 2005 World Summit in September.

Secretary General Kofi Annan thanked Mr. Petersen, saying the document provides a basis for a wide-ranging consensus on the issues of disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
