University of North Dakota (UND) is one of the few schools in the upper Midwest that offers studies in Norwegian. Currently there are 66 students taking Norwegian language classes and 19 students taking Norwegian culture classes. As of January 2011, UND also offers Norwegian language classes online as the first university in the US.

There are several ways of learning Norwegian in the US, from full-blown degree courses in to part-time evening courses, private tutors and self-study. Norwegian belongs to the northern group of Germanic languages. It is very similar to Swedish and Danish and is also related to English, German and Dutch.
