Travel Medical Insurance Information
Last updated: 5/3/2011 //
Applicants often experience delays in processing because their insurance does not cover Schengen requirements. Please read this information carefully to ensure that you have sufficient coverage:
- The insurance must cover any expenses which might arise in connection with urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital treatment, and emergency medical transporation back to country of residence (repatriation). The minimum coverage for these elements must be minimum EURO 30 000 (USD 50000).
- The insurance must cover on-the-spot assistance (medical expenses and repatriation, etc), which is different from reimbursement of expenses made only when the applicant has returned from travel.
- The travel insurance must have a $0 deductible, include an individual policy number as well as start and end-dates for the policy.
- Most US health insurances do not cover emergency medical transporation back to country of residence.
- Your proof of insurance must clearly reflect these requirements (a copy of your insurance card is not enough). If your documents do not reflect them, it is your responsibility to get appropriate information. If unsure, please request documentation/ a letter from your insurance company before submitting your application, as the consulate will always ask for this before processing your application.
- Persons covered by their business insurance plan may ask their employers to verify the above in a letter (this must be a signed original with letterheard).
- If the visa application is rejected, the mission is not responsible for any related expenses.
- If your current insurance does not cover the needed, the Consulate General cannot recommend any company in particular. In the past, applicants have successfully used:
