Passports

In this section you will find information for passport applicants. Contact the Embassy, one of the Consulates General or Honorary Consuls for further information.

Norwegian Foreign Service missions now only accept applications for machine-readable passports. The applicant must meet in person at a Foreign Service mission when applying for a passport. The passport will be printed in Norway, and the processing time will be approximately 5 to 6 weeks. In emergency cases, a hand written passport may be issued by the Foreign Service mission. An emergency passport would be given a short validity and would have to be surrendered at the end of the trip. The fee is the same as for a regular passport.

Note: If you are a Norwegian citizen living in the US with a valid Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) and a valid, old Norwegian passport; you do NOT need to replace your old passport with a machine-readable one until your old passport expires.

How to apply

  • You will be given a passport application to complete at the Embassy or Consulate General upon arrival.

In addition, please bring the following documentation:

  • 2 recent passport photos. Click HERE for photo requirements. The photos MUST be taken by a professional photographer or at a facility that specializes in taking passport photos. "Homemade" digital photos that are printed on a home-office printer do not qualify.
